According to the New York Times, the number of households that have a TV set on at 4:30 a.m. has doubled over the last 15 years, to 16 percent this year from 8 percent in 1995.
Recognizing a growing audience, broadcast news outlets across the country are starting their news programming earlier. CBS3 here in Philadelphia, for example, will begin their news (anchored by Ukee Washington, above center) at 4:30 a.m. starting next week.
Most broadcast news outlets previously started their local news programming at 6 a.m. or earlier.
