Can Journalism Learn from Pledge Music?

At Pledge Music, they are changing the way bands record, interact with their audiences and get funded.

On the site, fans can support a new band by pledging money toward their project. For their pledge, they can receive the finished album (or EP), merchandise, face time with the band or other cool stuff. Some bands will even do live performances for larger pledges.

The site was created in response to the changing world of the music industry. Journalism is going through a very similar radical change. Is there a model here that journalists can replicate? Is there a way to get citizens to pay for content (aside for PBS/ NPR and the spot.us models which are heavily subsidized)?
